Network & Information Security: EU aims to increase awareness
The European Commission is trying to promote greater awareness in Europe of the need to protect information and equipment, after research has shown that businesses, individuals and public administrations still underestimate the risks.
The European Commission is trying to promote greater awareness in Europe of the need to protect information and equipment, after research has shown that businesses, individuals and public administrations still underestimate the risks.
In a policy document published on 31st May, it sets out its aim to promote a general security consciousness and an awareness of the actions that people and businesses need to take in order to protect themselves.
Its document also sets out a number of specific proposals including the benchmarking of national policies on network and information security, the exchange of best practice and steps to raise the security awareness of end-users. It will be helped in these initiatives by the European Network and Information Security Agency based in Heraklion (Greece).
At the same time, the Commission in consulting interested parties on the security and privacy implications of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) and plans to present the conclusions later this year.
