Just under 150 of South Yorkshire's most promising entrepreneurs gathered at Bramall Lane to listen to former Dragons' Den resident, Simon Woodroffe, pass on his expertise on running successful businesses.
The event was the launch of the Raw Talent programme, a series of events organised by Business Link South Yorkshire's High Growth Start Up team for new or recently established entrepreneurs, comprising a series of master classes, network groups and accelerator programmes. The High Growth Start Up programme is part funded through the European Union and Yorkshire Forward.
Simon enthused the audience with his passion for business, encouraging South Yorkshire's freshest entrepreneurs to step out of their comfort zone and go all out for what they want to achieve.
He is also a firm believer in entrepreneurs taking advantage of programmes such as Raw Talent, which offers support and advice to people who often start out either on their own or with a small staff. "I have never met the busy person who took time out to come to an event like this and regretted it," said Simon. "But I've met loads of people who put off coming to an event and end up wishing they had."
Delegates were encouraged to think differently about solving business problems by theatrical group, Cragrats, who got the audience to come up with solutions for a difficult business scenario.
Jon Short, from website developers Webmesters, was one of the delegates. "It's been an excellent day - Simon Woodroffe is a great speaker and I've really learnt the importance of passion from him. The Cragrats were great too, offering a different approach to solving business problems, which really got people thinking."
Gavin Hine is the High Growth Start Up Team Leader for Business Link South Yorkshire. "It was a great start to the 2006 programme of events for Raw Talent. It's important for entrepreneurs to realise that they're not on their own and that there is plenty of help available for them, whether it is master classes in specific subjects such as sales and marketing, or the networking opportunities."
