?Promoting and Optimising Your Website? ? IT & Digital York Seminar Gives Vital Tips For Web Success

03 June 2006

Three regional experts share their knowledge and experience about ?search engine optimisation? and ?pay per click? advertising.

IT & Digital York, one of three clusters that forms part of the Science City York business support initiative, hosted a highly popular seminar and networking lunch at the GSPK Technology Park in Knaresborough on 18 May 2006 designed to help local companies maximise their presence on the internet and to offer new networking opportunities to North Yorkshire businesses.

Andy Gurnell, Business Promoter, Science City York, introduced three regional experts to share their knowledge and experience about ?search engine optimisation? and ?pay per click? advertising, giving more than 70 delegates from across North Yorkshire a range of practical tips, which can be easily implemented in their own business.

The first presenter was Andy Kitchener, CEO of Shopcreator. Andy founded Shopcreator eight years ago with a vision of a customer configurable on-line shop. Now the company is a leading provider of e-business websites that are simple to use and fully scalable - ranging from simple transactional web sites, to fully integrated e-business solutions.

In an entertaining and revealing talk, Andy explained the three key steps to achieve a ?top scoring page?, how to design your web page so that the search engines rank it highly, the importance and not always obvious choice of domain names, tips on the use of key words and how to develop links to your site.

Andy Atkins-Kruger, MD of Webcertain entitled his talk ?The Phenomenal Search Phenomenon?, and gave an insight into ?succeeding in a crowded market place?. Webcertain specialises in multi lingual websites and marketing and Andy is also President of the Search Marketing Association. Offering ?Top Ten Tips? for search engine success, Andy explained why search engines have become such an important business driver, how people use them, the importance of offering something ?remarkable? to make your business stand out, why developing specialisms and niche markets is important. He also emphasised the importance of using both ?on and offline? PR to encourage repeat users to your site.

Seggy T Segaran, MD of Crucible Technologies was the final speaker of the day and spoke about the lessons he has learned in taking his company from having just an online ?brochure? to becoming a full, and successful, online shop in a telecom related sector. Detailing his own ?Five Rules For Success? Seggy described the benefits of pay per click marketing and how he drives traffic to his website.

In addition to the three guest speakers, delegates were also invited to see a demonstration from Leeds Metropolitan University ?Usability Services? of ?eye tracking?, a state of the art technique that aims to optimise the benefits companies derive from their websites through eye movement analysis and interpretation.

Andy Gurnell, Science City York commented:?It was great to hear exactly how companies can make the most out of promoting their businesses on the web, and hear from their personal experience of what works and what doesn?t. It also demonstrated the vibrancy of engaging businesses in the IT & Digital sector across North Yorkshire?
